"There are places where you grew up, or learnt to spell, or they provided the garden backdrop for your wedding photos. They are what advocacy group the Singapore Heritage Society (SHS) describes as Singapore's housing, industrial, schooling and leisure heritage. These categories may not involve splendid colonial buildings, but they are valuable for the role they have played in national life."
– Melody Zaccheus, The Straits Times, 2014
THE PATCH is a series of publication about these "sacred" places to create historical awareness amongst young Singaporeans, to relive memories and capturing them in print.
Beyond grand colonial buildings or fancy shophouses, there are places such as warehouses and schools, whose merit lies in their role in the national story. These are places Singapore consider "sacred" – places Singaporeans feel most connected to, and believe should be protected.
Featured in this series of publication, are a few places picked out of the places Singaporeans considered "sacred", from a poll The Straits Times conducted. These are places that we grew up in, places that play an important role in the building of our nation.
THE PATCH – Pieces of the past and present PATCHed together to reveal a greater story.
3 Issues:
01: Unveiling
02: Remembering
03: Reminiscing
I chose to use a different colour as well as shape for each issue, and work my design and layout within the shape for each. The shapes are patched together like a quilt, signifying the different stories and memories that goes behind each piece. Each issue also feature stories from both the past and the present of each place.
I also stimulated a website and social media to encourage readers to contribute and also to promote this publication. Readers can share their personal experiences and also contribute to the publication so THE PATCH can stay relevant to these young people. These places may seem old or ordinary, but everyone have their own different stories which can be very personal to them.
